On
July 29, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit
Manasyan met with Dr. Philip D. Jaffé, Vice-Chair of the UN Committee on the
Rights of the Child.
During
the meeting, the Defender presented the programs and priority areas implemented
by the Human Rights Defender’s Office in the field of children's rights. Ms.
Anahit Manasyan specifically emphasized that the protection and promotion of
children's rights are always under her direct attention, despite the challenges
in the field.
The
challenges in the field of children’s rights were discussed, and the need to
continuously develop the capacities of specialists working with children in
order to address these challenges was emphasized.
In
her speech, the Defender emphasized the importance of expanding international
cooperation and deepening partnership in the field of human rights protection.
In this context, a number of key areas of cooperation were discussed.
In
turn, Dr. Philip D. Jaffé highly appreciated the activities of the Human Rights
Defender’s Office of the Republic of Armenia in the field of children’s rights,
emphasizing the readiness to strengthen continuous partnership and joint
efforts.
After
the meeting, a discussion was held with the participation of the HRDO staff, as
well as current and former members of the Public Council on Children’s Rights
Protection adjunct to the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia.
During
the discussion, the parties referred a number of fundamental and urgent
problems in the field, including obstacles to the effective implementation of
the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, lack of awareness of children's
rights, the need to develop professional skills in the field, limitations on
the realization of the right to education, issues of ensuring equal
opportunities, as well as manifestations of bullying and discrimination.
The
members of the Public Council presented their concerns and recommendations,
emphasizing the need for systematic reforms in the field and ensuring
continuity of cooperation.
