On 20 February, the Human
Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan conducted a
working visit to the Shirak Province.
Within the framework of the
visit, a meeting was held with the Governor of Shirak Province Mr. David
Arushanyan.
The meeting was attended by
representatives of the Governor’s Office and the Human Rights Defender’s
Office.
Problems related to the
protection of human rights in the province were discussed, including
socio-economic challenges, as well as the importance of ensuring systemic
solutions.
Inter alia, reference was
made to housing provision for persons affected by the earthquake and the
problem of homelessness, the problem of stray animals, ensuring freedom of
speech and preventing the spread of hate speech, as well as ensuring the
exercise of electoral rights.
The Human Rights Defender,
Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized the importance of effective cooperation between
state and local bodies, noting: “The protection of the rights of residents of
the provinces is one of the key priorities of my activities. During visits to
various communities, numerous problems are recorded, the solution of which
requires effective cooperation with state and local self-government bodies.
Ensuring a proper system for the realization of the rights of each citizen is
an essential condition for building a just and respectful society”.
