On April 11, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of
Armenia Ms. Anahit Manasyan visited Yerevan Basic School № 147 Named After
Robert Abajyan and delivered a lecture for senior students.
The visit was carried out in the context of the
implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the
Child and the functions of human rights education.
In her speech, the Defender emphasized the importance of
meetings with schoolchildren in this format as an effective means of strengthening
human rights education.
“For me, education has primary importance in the context
of human rights protection and the formation of a harmonious and tolerant
environment. In today's civilized world, it is impossible to imagine a human
rights protection system without a proper educational environment,” the
Defender noted.
Ms. Anahit Manasyan presented students the directions of
the Human Rights Defender's activities, the scope of her mandate, spoke about
the challenges in the field of human rights protection and the steps taken to
address them. Reference was also made to the activities of the Public Council
on Children’s Rights Protection adjunct to the Human Rights Defender.
The meeting was held in a Q&A format and covered
several important topics, including equality, non-discrimination, and the
protection of the rights of women, children, persons with disabilities, and
national minorities.
Issues related to bullying, its negative consequences and
prevention measures were also discussed.
In her concluding remark, Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized
the importance of combining the efforts of each of us to implement positive
changes in our own environment and overcome existing problems in the field of
human rights protection.
At the end of the visit, Ms. Anahit Manasyan toured the
school, getting acquainted with the conditions of the educational institution,
school routine, and had conversations with the school directorate, staff, as
well as students.
