On May 20, the joint visit of the Human Rights Defender
of the Republic of Armenia and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Armenia
to Syunik region continued.
Ms. Anahit Manasyan and Ms. Françoise Jacob visited the
Meghri community. During the meeting with the head of the community, Mr.
Khachatur Andreasyan, issues related to human rights in the community, as well
as socio-economic issues, were discussed. The head of the community noted that
there are other issues related to access to drinking and irrigation water,
medical care and services in the settlements and other issues requiring
solutions.
Issues related to the rights of residents of border
settlements of the region, cooperation with international actors in the field
of human rights protection were discussed.
The Defender and the UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia
also visited the settlements of Alvank and Shvanidzor. Meetings were held with
teachers and students in the schools of the settlements. The Defender got
acquainted with the building conditions of educational institutions, the
educational process, and working conditions. Issues related to human rights that
require priority solutions were discussed with administrative leaders and
residents, in particular, issues related to access to water, medical care and
services, the right to education, employment, and other issues.
Within the scope of her mandate, Ms. Anahit Manasyan will
raise the discussed issues and recommend solutions for them.
A meeting was also held in Meghri with representatives
and beneficiaries of the “Vinnet Armenia” Women’s Resource Center.
During the meeting, issues related to the protection and
promotion of women’s rights, the rights of children with disabilities, their
caregiver parents, ensuring access to medical services, and other issues were
discussed.
The Human Rights Defender's regional visits to
familiarize herself with human rights issues in the republic are ongoing.
