At
the initiative of Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit
Manasyan, a meeting-discussion was organized on the occasion of the
International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
The
event was attended by female representatives of diplomatic missions and
international organizations accredited in Armenia, as well as mothers and wives
of victims of enforced disappearances and persons whose whereabouts are
unknown.
During
the discussion, a number of sensitive and priority issues in the field that
require solutions were addressed, including active efforts to clarify the fate
of individuals, improvements to existing mechanisms of legal protection, the
application of tools provided by key international actors, etc.
The
Human Rights Defender noted that the right to receive information about the
fate of individuals must be guaranteed, and all stakeholders should exert
maximum efforts in this regard.
Within
the framework of the joint discussion, international partners also presented
the capacities within their mandates, as well as the steps already undertaken
to respond to the concerns voiced by the parents and to seek solutions.
The
participants of the event highlighted the importance of holding direct and
effective discussions in such a format.
The
Human Rights Defender, in turn, noted that she will continue, to the fullest
extent of her mandate, to engage all stakeholders on issues concerning the
proper safeguarding of the rights of missing and forcibly disappeared persons,
as well as their families, with particular emphasis on the importance of
clarifying the fate of the persons concerned.
